What are the similarities of Paintball vs Airsoft? Both paintball and airsoft are combat simulation games, and both are very popular. In such games, participants are eliminated from play when they are hit by small projectiles launched from guns that (some more than others) resemble real-life firearms -- this is part of the thrill, but also part of the controversy. ...and some differences? There are many similarities between these two games, but also a few key differences that should be noted. Airsoft provides an experience that more closely resembles real-life warfare (and is a generally cheaper pursuit), but paintball is more popular -- its more mainstream appeal leads to larger, better organized events. Airsoft Equipment: Airsoft requires (of course) an airsoft gun, BBs to shoot, and eye protection, although many sites require a full face mask. These regulations are in place for the physical safety of the participants, although there are many other things optionally available -- padded body armor, cool helmets, military-style attire, you name it. All sites have their own rules and play differently -- expectations may vary from place to place. Paintball Equipment: Paintball ammunition differs from the BBs used in airsoft. Paintball projectiles are hollow, gelatin capsules filled with colored dye. The gun used in paintball is properly called a marker. A mask is required, and there are quite a few creative and interesting variations out there, including this Iron Man-style offering. Paintball also requires a hopper (the device used to feed ammunition into the marker) and a tank of compressed CO2 to provide power. As with airsoft, other protective equipment is available, but is generally optional. Back to Master Paintball Club Home
